Jeff Lederer (b.1962) is a saxophonist/clarinetist whose unique musical language balances the values of ecstatic expression and swing. His playing has recently been described as “speaking in tongues” (Hartford Courant) and “slaying dragons” (NPR).
Lederer is the leader of the left-wing Christian rock band “Shakers n' Bakers” which re-imagines “Vision Songs” of the Shakers through the lens of the music of Albert Ayler on the group's two CD's. With his wife, vocalist Mary LaRose, he has produced 4 albums on the GM, CIMP and his own Little I Music labels. Lederer's Latin-inspired interpretation of the Vivaldi Four Seasons, “Los Sazones” for Orchestra and Salsa Band, was commissioned and premeired by the Chicago Symphony in 2003 and has been performed by them twice as well as by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and many regional orchestras.
His new band, “Sunwatcher” is a musical love letter to Albert Ayler which evokes Albert's spirit without mimcry of his repetoire or style. Along with Jamie Saft (piano), Buster Williams(bass) , and Matt Wilson (drums), Lederer reaches for the sounds of the sacred and the profane. The quartet's recording will be released in June 2011 on the Jazzheads label.
Lederer is a long-time member of the Matt Wilson quartet as well as salsa artist Jimmy Bosch's band. He is also currently a member of the Bobby Sanabria Big Band and the Katie Bull project. Upcoming projects will include work the the string quartet Brooklyn Rider and Michael Musilami. A committed educator, Lederer works with the NYC Public Schools as well as a curriculum consultant for the Harmony Program and with Jazz at Lincoln Center.
